The Plaza Principal de Calvillo: the ambience of a village market
The town has two main parties: Guava Fair, which is in early December and the Lord of Salitre Fair. So, take a walk through the Plaza Principal de Calvillo on the first Sunday of the fair. Indeed, you will see why the locals call this singular event the village fair. Vendors, merchants and craftsmen set up stalls here, almost turning the village square in a outdoor market. Also, on holidays, people gather in this main square to chat, listen to music from bands or just relax. All of this in the shade of tropical trees. Besides, the Plaza Principal is an aromatic place because of the presence of numerous orange trees.
A colorful place to enjoy the Sun
The Plaza Principal de Calvillo, as in most colonial cities of Mexico, is located in the heart of the historic center. With its charming fountains, its green spaces within small orange and white walls and its Mexican flag, this place is a stunning colorful place to have a walk and enjoy the sun. The is also a beautiful rotunda with a red roof, it can serve as a bandstand. Finally, in the east side of the square, stands the majestic Parish of the Lord of Salitre.
A cultural visit right after your stroll
The Templo del Senor del Salitre is a stunning building, visible directly from the Plaza Principal de Calvillo. Its has a rare wooden floor and one of the most large and luminous domes of Latin America. The exterior of the church has a sober and simple neoclassical facade and the gateway has a great semicircular arch. Inside, a basilica with three naves symbolizing the Holy Trinity. The side arches and vault display green and yellow colors. Finally, in the huge octagonal dome, you can observe beautiful frescoes in each branch. Find out more.
